Olivia Newton-John & Andy Gibb - Rest Your Love On Me (UNICEF Concert, 1979 | Solid Gold, 1981)

 

What a heartfelt touching performance of this beautiful song! This video features Olivia Newton-John and Andy Gibb performing Rest Your Love On Me in the UNICEF Concert on January 9, 1979 and on the Solid Gold TV show aired on September 12, 1981. Olivia and Andy's Rest Your Love On Me is so beautiful and impressive with their voices and chemistry coming together perfect in harmony and feelings. RIP Olivia & Andy. You both are dearly missed. 

Olivia, Andy, Bee Gees, ABBA and other artists took part in The Music for UNICEF Concert, which was a benefit concert of popular music held in the United Nations General Assembly in New York City on January 9, 1979. The concert was broadcast internationally to raise funds for UNICEF. Olivia and Andy sang two songs each in the concert: Rest Your Love On Me (duet by Olivia and Andy), The Key (solo by Olivia) and I Go For You (solo by Andy). In 1981, Olivia also appeared on the Solid Gold TV show, singing Rest Your Love On Me with Andy once again, who hosted Solid Gold in 1981-1982. Olivia was appointed as a U.N. ambassador on the environment in 1990, serving a two-year term in the post designed to help promote U.N. goals and activities in dealing with environmental issues. 

Rest Your Love on Me was originally written and sung by Barry Gibb in 1976 and recorded by the Bee Gees for the B-side of their US No. 1 hit "Too Much Heaven". Andy Gibb recorded Rest Your Love on Me as a duet with Olivia Newton-John for his 1980 album After Dark. Barry Gibb also recorded the song with Olivia on his 2021 album Greenfields, which is one of Olivia’s last recordings before her passing in 2022. Since Olivia had previously recorded Rest Your Love on Me with Barry's younger brother Andy for his After Dark album, it was in memory of Andy, who died in 1988. The album Totally Hot is totally hot with great songs hinting Olivia's transformation by expanding her repertoire of songs and style. A Little More Love (written and produced by John Farrar) was recorded in the studio in Los Angeles, CA and released as the lead single from the album Totally Hot in October 1978, becoming a worldwide hit. The song reached #3 in US, #2 in Canada, #4 in UK and #9 in Australia at its peak position on hit charts 1978 - 1979. It also became a #1 single in Israel. Totally Hot is Olivia's tenth studio album, released in November 1978. It became her first top-ten album on the Billboard 200 chart since Have You Never Been Mellow (1975). Olivia's Great Walk To Beijing 2008 (2:28) Olivia and her team walked 228 kilometers along the Great Wall of China, which was an effort to raise funds for the Olivia Newton-John Cancer and Wellness Centre. Olivia said: 

"People are asking me why do you want to walk 200 kilometers along the Great Wall of China, up 40 degree gradients, across mountain ranges and through dust storms of the Gobi Desert. The answer is that this journey – this million steps towards the cure for cancer – started for me 15 years ago, when I was diagnosed with breast cancer. That life-changing experience has given me some true understanding and compassion for others walking that path – and I want to help. That's why I am so excited to be leading this walk on the Great Wall to raise money and awareness for the Olivia Newton-John Cancer and Wellness Centre – these 21 days on the Wall will be another part of my own journey."

Jill Kinmont Boothe , also known as Jill Kinmont (1936 - 2012):

Jill was a promising U.S. national champion skier, who became an educator and a painter after she was paralyzed (quadriplegic) during a slalom race at age 18. She was a top contender for the 1956 US Olympic team. Her accident occurred the same week she appeared on the cover of Sports Illustrated magazine in 1955. Her life story was adapted into two Hollywood movies The Other Side of the Mountain (1975) and The Other Side of the Mountain Part 2 (1978). The Other Side of the Mountain was nominated for the Academy Awards (Best Original Song) and the Golden Globe Awards (Best Actress, Best Original Score, Best Original Song). Marilyn Hassett, who played Jill Kinmont, won Golden Globe's Best Acting Debut in a Motion Picture. 

Jill Kinmont was inducted into the National Ski Hall of Fame in 1967.

The Great Wisteria at Ashikaga Flower Park, also known as "Miraculous Great Wisteria", is over 160 years old, spreading over 10,000sqf(930sqm) trellis area and the white wisteria tunnel is 262ft(80m) long.

It's a beauty out of this world. Magically beautiful, elegant and breathtaking. The wonderful smell of wisteria flowers permeates all over the park. 

CNN acclaimed the great wisteria as a fantastic spectacle, equal to that of Tree of Souls from the movie Avatar. It was also selected among the top 10 international dream tourist destinations in the world by CNN in 2014.

Olivia Newton-John: State Memorial (February 26, 2023)

 

 

State Memorial Service for Dame Olivia Newton-John AC DBE

 

A State Memorial Service was held to honour the extraordinary life of Dame Olivia Newton-John AC DBE at Hamer Hall, Arts Centre Melbourne, at 4 pm on Sunday 26 February.

The Service was a celebration of Dame Olivia's life with music and videos shown throughout the afternoon.

Master of Ceremonies, David Campbell OAM, led the memorial. He welcomed everyone in attendance, as well as those watching and listening in Australia and around the world.

Wurundjeri Elder Aunty Di Kerr OAM performed the Welcome to Country. She reflected on the occasions she had met Dame Olivia and how her music and movies had brought her and her family so much joy.

Bumpy and Jake Amy performed a touching rendition of Grace and Gratitude. The Australian National Anthem was performed by the Christ Church Grammar School Choir, the school that Dame Olivia attended.

Video tributes, photos and fond memories were shared by Dame Olivia’s husband, John Easterling, her daughter Chloe Lattanzi, and niece, Tottie Goldsmith OAM. Each recalled how as a wife, mother and aunt, Dame Olivia’s tenderness, connection, strength and laughter were always a source of affection, love and light in their worlds.

Professor Matthias Ernst, speaking on behalf of the Olivia Newton-John Cancer Research Institute and Debbie Shiell speaking on behalf of the Olivia Newton-John Cancer Wellness and Research Centre spoke about Dame Olivia’s extraordinary contribution and dedication as a patron and advocate for the hospital that bears her name.

They shared how Dame Olivia’s vision and leadership were integral in creating the positive treatment, education, training and research centre. Dame Olivia’s insight into the shared human experience of healing has ensured the hospitals’ dedicated wellness spaces for mind, body and spirit have helped thousands of people throughout their cancer journeys.

Richard Wilkins AM spoke on behalf of the entertainment industry. He recalled Dame Olivia’s passion for making the world a better place – not only through her music, movies, foundation and philanthropy – but through sharing her spirit with everyone she met.

Dame Olivia was then honoured with video tributes from friends from around the world, including Dolly Parton, Nicole Kidman AC, Sir Cliff Richard OBE, P!nk, Sir Barry Gibb AC CBE, Mariah Carey, Keith Urban AO, RuPaul, Hugh Jackman AC, Tina Arena AM, Richard Marx and Sir Elton John CH CBE.

Delta Goodrem AM and her band performed the final tribute of the service, with a stirring and emotional medley of Dame Olivia’s greatest hits, encouraging the crowd to join in and shine their own love and light into the room.

Master of Ceremonies, David Campbell OAM closed the service by thanking everyone for their attendance and joining the celebration of Dame Olivia’s remarkable life.

The portrait of Dame Olivia and flowers from the State Memorial Service were donated to the Olivia Newton-John Cancer Wellness and Research Centre for patients and their families to enjoy.

Description of “I love you, California” 

California’s State Song, “I Love You California,” is a musical celebration of the state. Songwriter F. B. Silverwood and composer A. F. Frankenstein, both of Los Angeles, wrote the song in 1913. After being first sung by opera star Mary Garden, the song went on to be performed on the first ship to pass through the Panama Canal and at the San Francisco World’s Fair in 1915. While it was under copyright, all proceeds from the sale of the song went to charitable organizations. 

In 1951, it was designated the State Song by the Legislature, and was later given statutory recognition in 1988, after the copyright had expired. Its lyrics celebrate California’s many natural wonders – Yosemite, redwoods, flowers, valleys, mountains and ocean. (Added to Statutes, Chapter 87, 1951)

Hummingbird Moth

 Is it a bird?....a bug?....a butterfly? No!…it’s a hummingbird moth! 

You might think you just saw a hummingbird!? Take a good look and notice it has a proboscis instead of a beak? 

Hummingbird moths fly and move just like hummingbirds. They can stay still hovering and humming in the air in front of a flower and sip nectar. 

Hummingbird moths have a super fast wingbeat up to 70 beats per second, and can fly up to 12 mph! 

It’s delightful to have a such a pleasant visitor in the garden!

Lavender Flowers with Mt. Fuji - Kawaguchiko Herb festival/2022

Beautiful and peaceful! Lavender flowers are so purple along the lake shore of Kawaguchiko which is one of Mt. Fuji's five surrounding lakes(Fujigoko/Fuji Five Lakes Region). 

It's breathtaking to see the lavender plants in full bloom looking like a purple velvet rolled out one after another. Several varieties of lavender are planted in Oishi Park as part of Kawaguchiko Herb Festival. The festival goes on from late June to early July.

Nōrin Sakura Dōri(Nōrin Cherry Blossom Street) is one of the most popular cherry blossom spots in Tsukuba. Someiyoshino and Yayoizakura cherry blossoms are proudly on parade all along this 1.5km street on the Agricultural Research Institute campus. 🌸🌸🌸
