Golden Gate Park Urban Hike via Haight Ashbury to Ocean Beach - San Francisco, CA

June 4, 2017

This is a great urban hike through Golden Gate Park from Haight Ashbury to Ocean Beach. It's about 4 miles one way starting from Haight Ashbury. GGP is one of the largest and most visited parks in US. The park is about 3 miles long, 1/2 mile wide. Shuttle service is available in the park if you want to trek one way or partially.

I used to come to GGP for events and occasions, but, wow, you realize how big the park is if you walk through it end to end! And there are many wonderful things you probably never knew that have existed in the park. Surprise!

Mugu Peak via Chumash Trail - Point Mugu State Park, CA

April 20, 2017

Great workout hike to Mugu Peak. Fantastic ocean views, Santa Monica Mountains and beyond....as far as the Channel Islands. Trail is very steep and footing is partially uneven, so be aware. You can choose the steep hike all way to the top, or veer right to take a moderately graded route after climbing the first stretch of the steep section. Runners use that route. Wildflowers are still blooming! Enjoy and be safe!

Ray Miller BackboneTrail Wildflowers 2017 - Point Mugu State Park/La Jolla Canyon, CA

April 19, 2017

Hills are alive with wildflowers! This is a gorgeous hike with breathtaking ocean views, wildflowers and birds chirping everywhere. It must be a super bloom effect. Colorful wildflowers are seen all along the trail and hillsides. Many different colors...yellow, orange, blue, purple, red, pink, white and more. CA poppy is one of them. I wish I knew the names of all the flowers I saw.

Trail climbs moderately to reach a vista point where the view opens up. A little farther up if you go to the top of saddle, 360 pano offers sweeping views of Pacific Ocean and Santa Monica mountains.

Note that La Jolla Canyon trail is closed. Ray Miller trailhead is open for this hike. Make sure to read updated notice/warnings at the trailhead before your journey. Also, be aware that trail partially gets brushy due to overgrown vegetation...invasive plants like Black Mustard covering part of the way, which could cause ecologically negative impacts and threats.

You can learn more about invasive plants at Santa Monica Mountains NPS site:

Runyon Canyon Park - Los Angeles, CA

April 14, 2017

It's hard to believe? Runyon Canyon Park is located right by Hollywood! It's a great place for workout and short hikes to explore nature. It also offers a dog park, so pet friendly environment. Trails are moderately steep, and some are very steep, but short. You can choose paved or dirt trails, and also loop or through hike. Like Griffith Park, this is a very popular park among walkers and runners. So, you won't be alone on the trail.

There are a few different entrances depending on where you want to start....from Fuller Ave or Vista St on Hollywood side, or from Mulholland Dr on the north side of the park. West Ridge trail is the steepest and East Ridge is moderately steep. You can loop around both ridges or hike the paved route which runs through between the two ridges.

Views along the trails, Vista points/Inspiration Point and from Indian Rock which is the highest point of the park are spectacular....Hollywood sign, Griffith Park and overlooking Hollywood, DTLA and as far as Parlos Verdes, Santa Monica Mountains and Pacific Ocean to the south as well as San Gabriel mountains and beyond to the north.

Outdoor Yoga class is offered in the park. Parking can be tough as you have to park on the street. Read the sign before you park!

Parker Mesa Overlook Via East Topanga Fire Road - Topanga State Park/Pacific Palisades, CA

April 5, 2017

Hiking to Parker Mesa Overlook offers breathtaking views of Santa Monica Bay and the Pacific Ocean all along the way, and the coastal line from Parlos Verdes to Malibu. From the overlook, you can see gorgeous pano views as far as San Gabriel mountains, Santa Anna range and Catalina Island when the sky is clear!

There are a few different routes for this hike. I took Paseo Miramar trail and hiked from the top of the street of Paseo Miramar where East Topanga Fire Road meets.

The hike is 5.7 miles RT, and elevation gain is 900 ft. Beautiful hike and enjoy the views!
