"Peak Views -  El Nino unveils the San Gabriels" - written in the San Gabriel Valley News on May 7, 1998.  Intrigued by the article, I went on to Hacienda Heights to see if I could catch the same vistas of the San Gabriel Mountains in May, 2011.  If you stood there on a clear day, you'd admit the beauty of the San Gabriels. I DID! People may not talk much about the mountains in Los Angeles, but the San Gabriels are definitely a big part of LA, no doubt. The mountain range lies between the Los Angeles Basin and the Mojave Desert, with I-5 to the west and I-15 to the east. If you want to appreciate LA more than beaches and Disneyland, you can hit a peak or two of the San Gabriels. You may be surprised to find a hidden gem of pleasure up there.

Major Peaks of the San Gabriel Mountains:

View northeast of Hacienda Heights - San Gabriel Mountains. Mt. Baldy (10,064'), Mt. Baden Powell (9,407'), Cucamonga Peak (8,862'), and Ontario Peak (8,693') are seen.

View northwest of Hacienda Heights - San Gabriel Mountains. Strawberry Peak (6,164'), Mt. Lukens (5,066'), Mt. Disappointment (5,960') and Mt. Wilson (5,710') stand prominent.
