Hiking Tiburon Part 2 of 2 - Tiburon, CA

June 25, 2017

Explore beautiful Tiburon by visiting Old St. Hilary's and hiking through Old St. Hilary's Open Space Preserve and Ring Mountain Open Space Preserve.

Old St. Hilary's is Tiburon’s iconic hillside landmark. It was originally a mission church named for St. Hilaire, Bishop of Poitiers. The church was built as a place of worship for local railroad workers in 1888. The building retains significant architectural importance because it is one of the few remaining Carpenter Gothic churches to survive in its original setting. Hiking up Old St. Hilary's Open Space Preserve offers wildflowers along the trail and breathtaking views in all directions from the top.

Ring Mountain Open Space Preserve is located on the west side of the Tiburon peninsula and can be hiked from several access points. The best approach is to start at the trailhead on Paradise Drive and follow the Phyllis Ellman Loop Trail to the top. Views of San Francisco and the entire Bay Area from the top are stunning. Ring Mountain Open Space was preserved to benefit future generations and saved from development due to the efforts of concerned citizens led by local conservationist Phyllis Ellman.

Hiking Tiburon Part 1 of 2 - Tiburon, CA

June 20, 2017

Hiking beautiful Tiburon peninsula! Views are amazing from every spot in town! This quaint and easygoing town offers wonderful hikes with incredible vistas and local history.

Hike up Tiburon Open Space Preserve for breathtaking views...SF Bay and the city, Angel Island, Golden Gate Bridge, Mt. Tam, Richmond Bridge and Bay Bridge with east side cities. There is a big tree called Hippie Tree with a rope swing. "Hippie Tree"....the origin of the name is unknown(?), but you'll be likely inspired by amazing views seen from there.

Trekking along the shoreline via Old Rail Trail from Blackie's Pasture and through McKegney Field to the east end of the Tiburon peninsula is another way to explore the beauty of the peninsula and its old history....fantastic views, historic Ark Row and beautiful homes in Belvedere as you hike along the bay. Read information boards along the trail for interesting history of Tiburon. You can also take a ferry to Angel Island or to the city if you want to extend your adventure.

Hiking up Twin Peaks from the Castro - San Francisco, CA

June 11, 2017

Going to Twin Peaks? Sure, to capture amazing views of the SF city and bay, Twin Peaks is no doubt one of the best views of SF....perhaps, shoulder to shoulder competition with Golden Gate Bridge. I used to drive up there, but this time I chose heading up there on foot instead of driving. Wow, it was fun and interesting!

I started the walk from the west end (20th and Douglass) of the Castro district. Walking through beautiful Victorian homes with flower gardens and seeing local scenes are quite interesting and educational. It makes you appreciate what SF offers with its beautiful scenery and unique character within in small details. And it's a good workout to walk up and down neighborhood stairways and streets, and the trails to Twin Peaks - Eureka Peak (north peak) and Noe Peak (south peak). Highly recommend!

360 panorama in all directions.....to the east - Oakland/Berkeley, East Bay hills, Mt. Diablo, Mission District, Potrero Hill and Bernal Hill; to the south - Mt. Davidson, Diamond Heights, San Bruno Mountain and Santa Cruz Mountains; to the west - Sunset District, Pacific Ocean and Daly City; to the north - downtown San Francisco, Golden Gate Park, Golden Gate Bridge, Marin Headands and Marin County with Mt. Tam.

Twin Peaks is also known for gusty wind, so bring a jacket with you and choose a less windy day for the trip.

Golden Gate Bridge to Slacker Ridge - Marin Headlands, CA

December 18, 2016

You want a spectacular view of San Francisco and Golden Gate Bridge just for yourself?  Then, ditch the crowd of tourists at the Vista Point and do this hike! It's a fantastic hike from Golden Gate Bridge to Slacker Ridge which is part of Marin Headlands. I like doing this hike whenever I want to see a breathtaking view of SF and GGB just for myself!

Slacker Ridge is a great local hike for a good and quick workout with spectacular 360 views of SF city and the bay along with Pacific Ocean, Rodeo Valley, Mt. Tam, East Bay, Mt Diablo and beyond! Awesome hike....two thumbs up!

It's a short hike (1.5 mile one way) gaining a moderate elevation up to 930 ft summit of Slacker Ridge, hiking up from the hillside of the north side of Golden Gate Bridge. You can combine this hike with other trails which are interconnected such as Rodeo Valley/beach, Tennessee Valley, Muir Woods, Mt. Tam, Marin Headlands, Kirby Cove, Battery Spencer, or trek across Golden Gate Bridge to Crissy Field. See the map.

You can also make a longer journey towards Lands End hiking from the south end of GGB, which offers a series of stunning views throughout this old historical trail. Cypress forest and wildflowers, views of shipwrecks, access to the Legion of Honor and finally reaching the ruins of Sutro baths at Lands End.

Trailhead:
Trailhead is located along Conzelman Rd about 1/4 mile up the road from North Tower Golden Gate Parking (Northwest Commuter Parking Lot).  Walk back the road uphill from the parking lot. There is a trail sign by the road which says SCA Trail. Follow SCA trail about a mile and go left at the intersection to follow Slacker Ridge trail.
