Description of “I love you, California”

California’s State Song, “I Love You California,” is a musical celebration of the state. Songwriter F. B. Silverwood and composer A. F. Frankenstein, both of Los Angeles, wrote the song in 1913. After being first sung by opera star Mary Garden, the song went on to be performed on the first ship to pass through the Panama Canal and at the San Francisco World’s Fair in 1915. While it was under copyright, all proceeds from the sale of the song went to charitable organizations.

In 1951, it was designated the State Song by the Legislature, and was later given statutory recognition in 1988, after the copyright had expired. Its lyrics celebrate California’s many natural wonders – Yosemite, redwoods, flowers, valleys, mountains and ocean. (Added to Statutes, Chapter 87, 1951)

Complete lyrics:

I Love You, California

1.

I love you, California, you're the greatest state of all.I love you in the winter, summer, spring and in the fall.I love your fertile valleys; your dear mountains I adore.I love your grand old ocean and I love her rugged shore.

Chorus

When the snow crowned Golden SierrasKeep their watch o'er the valleys bloom,It is there I would be in our land by the sea,Every breeze bearing rich perfume.It is here nature gives of her rarest. It is Home Sweet Home to me,And I know when I die I shall breathe my last sighFor my sunny California.

2.

I love your red-wood forests – love your fields of yellow grain.I love your summer breezes and I love your winter rain.I love you, land of flowers; land of honey, fruit and wine.I love you, California; you have won this heart of mine.

3.

I love your old gray Missions – love your vineyards stretching far.I love you, California, with your Golden Gate ajar.I love your purple sun-sets, love your skies of azure blue.I love you, California; I just can't help loving you.

4.

I love you, Catalina, you are very dear to me.I love you, Tamalpais, and I love Yosemite.I love you, Land of Sunshine, half your beauties are untold.I loved you in my childhood, and I'll love you when I'm old.

Hummingbird Moth

 Is it a bird?....a bug?....a butterfly? No!…it’s a hummingbird moth!

You might think you just saw a hummingbird!? Take a good look and notice it has a proboscis instead of a beak?

Hummingbird moths fly and move just like hummingbirds. They can stay still hovering and humming in the air in front of a flower and sip nectar.

Hummingbird moths have a super fast wingbeat up to 70 beats per second, and can fly up to 12 mph!

It’s delightful to have a such a pleasant visitor in the garden!

Lavender Flowers with Mt. Fuji - Kawaguchiko Herb festival/2022

Beautiful and peaceful! Lavender flowers are so purple along the lake shore of Kawaguchiko which is one of Mt. Fuji's five surrounding lakes(Fujigoko/Fuji Five Lakes Region).

It's breathtaking to see the lavender plants in full bloom looking like a purple velvet rolled out one after another. Several varieties of lavender are planted in Oishi Park as part of Kawaguchiko Herb Festival. The festival goes on from late June to early July.

Hiking Mt. Karamatsu 唐松岳

Hiked on 9/15/2021

Mt. Karamatsu, known as Karamatsu-dake(唐松岳) is located in Hakuba, Nagano prefecture, where the 1998 Winter Olympic Games took place.

A couple of ski lifts take you up to trailhead/Happoike Sanso at 1850m. For RT it takes about 7hrs with 850 meter elevation gain and loss. The hike offers a pristine alpine lake, seasonal wildflowers, fall folisge and wildlife such as Ptarmigan, known as Raichō(雷鳥) and Japanese Macaque monkey Nihonzaru(ニホンザル).

Mt. Karamatsu is a great day hike to explore and get a taste of the Northern Alps of Japan with breathtaking landscape, mountain peaks, pristine alpine lakes and beautiful nature in all directions. 👍👍

Japanese macaque monkey(ニホンザル):

I wasn’t really expecting monkeys with this hike, but came across quite a few of them en route as they were coming and going across the trail here and there. It was like playing “hide and seek” along the trail with them! 😅🐵🐒

Stats(approx.):

Distance: 10km/6.2miles

Gain: 850m/2,789'

Summit: 2,696m/8,845’

Time: 7hr RT
